		<description>Thanks for the information and pictures.  This was a great insight for me, and I&quot;m sure will save me a lot of grief when installing crown mouldings, which although cut perfectly by the miter saw, will not be matched perfectly in the actual corners of the room.  Much appreciated. John</description>

If you are going to be putting the crown around a pillar, you would have no use for a coping saw, only inside corners are coped.  You will need a miter saw, however.  An octagon would be 8 45 degree angles, 16 2250&#039;s.</description>

The main reason I ask is because I would like to put some crown moulding around an octagon-shaped pillar that meets a sloped ceiling. Am I better off measuring the angles and cutting by hand, or would a compound mitre saw make things easier on me?</description>
