Mantel Design Tips

November 13th, 2007 · 2 Comments

Pop and I have been building custom mantels longer then we’ve been building bars. Honestly, I could not begin to tell you how many different styles of mantels that we’ve built. I can tell you that there are as many designs out there as people, so the options are endless. The trouble with choosing a design is that they all look so good. I’ve found by looking at your existing furniture and cabinetry around your home can help you determine what looks best. You can at least start the process of elimination this way. Here are a few photos to help you started.

I’ve been looking for a design EXACTLY like your knotty pine mantel, the one with the curved arch and side flutes. It is beautiful, and would fit right in with my decor, around a very blah looking brick fireplace. Are design specs available, what is the approximate cost of materials? Did you route the details, or, purchase the peices already carved? It’s just a wonderful design, simple yet stunning. It’s not often you see a curved arch over a straight edge firebox, but this is what I’ve been seeking out for a long time. How is the arch made so perfectly? Thanks for any assistance you can offer! Good choice!
This mantel is one of my favorites also.
We built this mantel from scratch using furniture grade pine we purchased from a local lumber company. The arched section was cut out using a router attached to a homemade radius cutting jig, that’s what gives it its perfect cut.
I don’t have any specs at this time; however plans for the plans are in the works.
I’ll post some more info on this mantel and others similar to it in the next couple of days.
    Thanks! Bryan
