Measuring with dados

November 26th, 2007 · 2 Comments

They say a picture is worth a thousand words, so here are a couple  thousand for you!

The object of building a cabinet with dado grooves is to cut down on time without sacrificing the integrity of the cabinet. In fact, you are adding to it!

The following drawings are examples of a basic carcass built out of 3/4″ plywood before the face frame is applied.

Here is a sample scenario on saving time:

Let’s just say you’re going to build a 36″ wide cabinet using 3/4″ thick plywood for both vertical sides. This means you have to subtract 1 1/2″  from your overall dimension to get your bottom shelf and upper support lengths. Now, by using 1/4″ deep dado grooves on both sides you’re giving back a 1/2″. So you’re only subtracting 1″ off the overall length of your bottom shelf and supports.

So now you know that whatever your overall width is, just subtract that inch and that’s the cut length of the bottom shelf & supports.(No Thinking involved!)
